The integrity of your RV’s roof is just as important as the roof on your home or any commercial building. Unfortunately, when an RV roof gets a leak, it’s usually a lot more troublesome than a small roof leak on a traditional structure. If you don’t address the issue right away, it can lead to further damage, including the risk of mold and mildew, electrical hazards, and more.
Fortunately, RV roof sealant exists, and it has come a long way in recent years. Today, there is a wide selection on the market to help you protect your RV roof and its components from the elements. This sealant is usually a liquid, but there are also some sealant tape products available today.
Part of your RV roof maintenance should include checking all the seals and seams for cracks and damage. Even the smallest sign of a crack needs to be repaired immediately so that it doesn’t lead to all the damage mentioned earlier. This is where RV roof sealant comes in—it’s designed to create a strong, durable seal along the seams and edges of your RV’s roof and the various components on it so that there is no chance of water getting through anywhere.
The sealant tape is also known as Eternabond tape and it’s best for small cracks and damage. It can be used on almost any RV roofing material (or other material) to create a waterproof seal. It sticks quickly and securely so make sure that you’ve got it where you need it.
The liquid sealant, also called lap sealant, is caulk-like in its application so that you can use it to seal seams around roof components and fixtures, screw holes, wires and antennas, and other areas. It’s a durable, yet flexible sealant that won’t harden or break over time like some products.
Then, there is rubber roof coating, which is usually found in sheets, tapes, or patch kits. These coatings are best for an all-over sealing or recoating as opposed to small repairs and seam patches. It’s available in EPDM and TPO, but that’s another conversation entirely.
Usually, people find that the RV roof sealant in the caulk-like form provides the best solution for keeping seams secure and watertight to prevent damage. It should be applied regularly, as well as anytime you add anything to the roof that needs to be sealed, and should be used for repairs and resealing on an as-needed basis.
